“Apply Image” is a powerful function that allows you adjust the contrast in the image. Apply image in principle is to take the layers and then applied back to the main image, you can choose to experiment with blending modes. Below is one way that I used.

1. Flatten your image.
2. Go to the menu Edit > Convert to Profile and choose a color LAB.
3. Further double your background layer.
4. Go to Image > Apply Image.
5. Select the Lightness Channel, Soft Light, Opacity 100%, and leave the two checkboxes only. You’ll get a picture like the funky pink and blue.
6. Change the layer blending mode to Luminosity to remove the odd colors but preserving tonal changes.
7. Adjust the layer opacity to taste and / or use a mask to localize the effect.
8. Once completed Convert back to RGB color.

You can also use this method to improve the color, by following the above steps but replace the ‘Lightness’ channel with either a or b LAB color channel. The default setting will give the somewhat tacky, so be sure to tone down the opacity.
